Illinois Not All Obama Territory

Illinois remains Obama territory, though that doesn’t mean every area of the state is a Democratic stronghold.
A statewide We Ask America poll done last week shows a traditional split in Illinois, with Chicago strongly Democratic and downstate leaning to the GOP.
Other recent tallies by the polling firm, an independent subsidiary of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, show that President Barack Obama’s coattails may not extend into every contested congressional district in the state.
New congressional districts were drawn by the Illinois General Assembly, which is controlled by Democrats, after the 2010 Census. That has yielded a situation, said Gregg Durham, chief operating officer of the polling firm, where even though downstate as a whole is a “clear winning territory” for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, there are some very Democratic congressional districts.
“When you have the ability to draw the map, you can slice it and dice it so that you put Democrats in a much better position to win,” said Durham, a former Springfield resident now of Downers Grove. We Ask America is based in Springfield and Oak Brook.
