It looks like Rita B. Garman will be the next chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.
Multiple sources confirmed to the Daily Law Bulletin today that Garman, 69, will in all likelihood take over for current Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride when his term ends in October.
She would be the court’s second female chief, after the late Mary Ann McMorrow, who held the post from 2002 to 2005.
Garman directed inquiries to court spokesman Joseph R. Tybor, who did not confirm whether Garman was next in line for the job and warned against speculating before the move became official.
He also shrugged off the notion that the court — which begins its September term on Monday — would definitely choose its next chief based on seniority. Garman is the most senior member of the court who has not yet served a three-year term as chief.
“The court can use whatever process it wants,” Tybor said.
