Jury Convicts Aurora Man Of Threatening Judge
From the Chicago Tribune
An Aurora man has been found guilty of threatening to kill a Kane County judge who had disciplined him during a court appearance in May, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Christopher Garcia Jr., 25, was convicted by a jury late Tuesday of a felony count of threatening a public official, prosecutors said.
Garcia, of the 500 block of Charles Street, was appearing May 13 in Aurora Branch Court on a misdemeanor charge of resisting a police officer when he became angry and was ordered held in contempt of court by Judge Alice Tracy, according to prosecutors.
When told he would be jailed 30 days for contempt, Garcia made specific threats of violence against the judge, prosecutors said.
"Threatening a judge, even as a joke or out of frustration, is just not a smart thing to do," Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said. "We take threats to public officials seriously, and we will prosecute them appropriately."
Judge Susan Clancy Boles set a sentencing date of Oct. 31. Garcia faces a two-to-five-year sentence, though probation also is an option. He is being held in the county jail on $104,000 bail.
