More Than 88,000 Illinoisans Enroll In Obamacare
From Crain's Chicago Business
More than 88,000 Illinois residents have signed up for benefits via the public health insurance exchange through Feb. 1, 44 percent more than had enrolled by the end of the year, according to figures published by the federal government Wednesday.
Nationwide, about 3.3 million people have enrolled in plans, either through the federally administered site, HealthCare.gov, or through state-run exchange sites. That figure was 53 percent above the 2.2 million as of Dec. 28.
“We're seeing a healthy growth in enrollment,” U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in an afternoon conference call.
As has been the pattern in the past, the Illinois enrollees skewed toward older adults, with about 35 percent of them between ages 55 and 64. About a quarter were in the coveted 18-to-34 age range.
About 54 percent of Illinois enrollees chose silver plans, which are the class of plans with the second-most generous coverage, and 75 percent purchased plans with the assistance of a federal subsidy.
About 47,000 Illinois enrollees, or about 54 percent, were female.
All told, 9.6 million people have gotten coverage nationally, either private insurance or through the Medicaid program, Ms. Sebelius said. The Obama administration's goal is to enroll 7 million people via state and federal exchanges by March 31.
Illinois officials have said they expect about 486,000 people to sign up by the same date.
