Chicago Law School Ties Spark Call For Recusal
From the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin
The lawyer appealing the dismissal of suits against three law schools asked Illinois Appellate Court justices who attended one of those schools to recuse themselves from the case.
The appellate court denied the request Friday without comment.
Justice Sheldon A. Harris signed the order denying the request. Harris attended one of the schools sued — The John Marshall Law School.
The other two law schools sued in February 2012 were IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law and DePaul University College of Law. The suits were filed by attorney Edward X. Clinton, his son, Edward X. Clinton Jr., and two New York lawyers.
All three schools were accused of defrauding certain students by publishing misleading statistics on jobs obtained by graduates. The suits were dismissed in Cook County Circuit Court in September and November.
Edward Clinton Jr. said he filed the motion last week to ask justices to recuse themselves only in the appeal regarding DePaul.
Clinton Jr. said he will soon ask the Illinois Supreme Court to issue a supervisory order to get the affected appellate court justices to recuse themselves.
The suits against the law schools are pending before the 1st District Appellate Court, where Clinton said four justices graduated from the law schools he sued.
His motion says Justice Maureen E. Connors graduated from IIT Chicago-Kent; Justices Patrick J. Quinn and Harris graduated from John Marshall; and Justice John B. Simon graduated from DePaul.
